The aquarium hobby in Oklahoma City has had a long and diverse history. The hobby can trace its roots back to 1949 with the formation of the first aquarium club in Oklahoma, the Aquarium Society of Oklahoma, by Mr. William Burt with the placement of an ad in Wm Innes, now famous, Aquarium Magazine. The club was active for a number of years, producing a bi-monthly newsletter called “Aquarium News” before slowly fading into obscurity. During the mid to late 1960s, a second incarnation of the club, now known as the Oklahoma City Aquarium Association was formed and this group maintained an impressive membership and managed to host the very first American Cichild Association Convention in 1972. Several local Oklahoma City residents in the hobby today, were young members of this 2nd incarnation. Years later, in 1999, two hobbyists who had met through an on-line listserv, decided it was time to bring the hobby back to Oklahoma City! Combining their efforts with 3 other individuals, they became the Oklahoma City Aquarium Association, Inc (OKCAA) and registered as a non-profit corporation with the State of Oklahoma. The OKCAA grew from an initial membership of only 5 individuals in 1999 to more than 30 by 2001! In 2006, the club added a chapter in Tulsa and again in 2008 added one in Stillwater. This development created a need to expand the realm of the club to include the entire state and what would become - in January 2010, the Oklahoma Aquarium Association (OKAA) indicating the club’s statewide perspective. TODAY (2010): To better reflect the original mission of the OKCAA, local hobbyists in the Oklahoma City area have dedicated themselves to strengthening the local unit and plan to get back to basics by concentrating solely on the local community of aquarists in the OKC and surrounding areas. This group of hobbyists, now known as *The Oklahoma Aquarium Club or (TOKAC)* continue to meet on the First Saturday of each month; rotating between participatory "hands-on" activities and simply social gatherings where items of interest are discussed and/or traded. Amongst the regular monthly meetings are educational presentations as well as guest speakers and special outings, group events & tours. The TOKAC members’ forum is now open to the public and anyone can participate and share their experiences with other hobbyists both locally and from around the globe! These meetings are open to anyone sharing our interests in aquatic life.
The typical agendas will concentrate on having fun first, with discussions, auctions, swaps, and informative presentations intermingled throughout the year as well. This will be an exciting year for aquarium hobbyists in Oklahoma and we look forward to meeting new and returning members and working together to produce even greater results! With a new website full of informative articles, multiple RSS feeds, interactive games, personalized member photo galleries and blogs, and access to helpful advice, all in a considerate and friendly environment; CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH ORGANIZATIONS AND BEST OF LUCK TO ALL!
